BluePearl Emergency Pet Hospital

The renovation of BluePearl Pet Hospital North Hills Annex was an opportunity to prioritize sustainable design principles. They were looking to achieve a ‘greener’, more balanced environment through the thoughtful integration of locally sourced materials, without pursuing formal LEED certification.

Our primary design intent was to craft an interior environment that was both clinically rigorous and deeply contextual. We drew inspiration directly from the city of Pittsburgh, particularly its historic railroad legacy, a defining feature of the area’s industrial backbone. This influence is reflected throughout the space: the arched forms along the exam hallway and the complementary curves in the reception area are designed to evoke the dramatic feeling of train tunnels and the consistent movement of the railway line. This concept is further reinforced in the waiting area, where the mirrored sides symbolize the parallel tracks of a railroad, creating a balanced and consistent visual language. Subtler design cues, such as the soft curve of the storefront extending into the ceiling bulkhead above the coffee bar and tracing down the wall, architecturally reinforce elements of the BluePearl logo, emphasizing brand recognition. These interior elements beautifully complement the building’s industrial exterior, creating a cohesive dialogue between the inside and outside.

The facility features four exam rooms, a comprehensive treatment area, a holding area, a lab, X-ray, Antech lab, and dedicated staff support spaces like a mother’s room and a breakroom. Delivering this high level of functionality required intensive collaboration to successfully integrate the MEP systems within the existing building constraints, manage a challenging metal feature wall at reception, and navigate complex coordination with the landlord and local permitting processes—all of which were completed to deliver a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital.
